On a cold, billowy evening of November 15, 1987, the conception of Birth Balance occurred in a New York loft on 22nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. Judith Elaine Halek, Director of Birth Balance, attended a labor, as a friend, labor support doula, massage specialist and pregnancy/labor/birth/family/newborn photographer.
At one end of the loft, the mother, father, Judith and midwife ended up seated train style in an 6.5 foot wide, 4 foot deep, copper butter urn. At 11:45 PM, the baby (Maxx) and Birth Balance were born. This marked the first home waterbirth with midwife in attendance in New York City.
